Special thanks to the Barako Boys (Macky, Ekel, Luy, Borga) for making this year a alcoholic year for me, my students back at Sacred Heart for the “pangungulit nyo sa Facebook”, to MIT Batch ’02 for the wonderful sessions we did this year, Raffmar (LokoMoko) as my Navigator and ever Loyal Cousin, Nyaki for giving me a splendid idea before the year ends (Special Mention – Isabel tropa).
One of the best, if no the best game of 2009 aside from Demon Souls (PS3), Left 4 Dead 2 (Multi) and Dragon Age: Origins (Multi), Modern Warfare 2 was the most anticipated game of this year. After a successful prequel, Infinity Ward quickly made a sequel to one of the best FPS shooters of all time. The gamble from WW2 era to Modern was really one of the greatest move by the guys behind this game.
In 24 hours, the game sold more than 4.7 million copies in North America and the UK alone totaling for about 310 Million USD. Wow! That’s more than Harry Potter’s Half Blood Prince cashed in this year and this game made it in 24 hours. Now according to TorrentFreak, it was also the most pirated game of 2009, totaling to 4 million unauthorized download for the PC version alone.
Most Pirated game 2009 - From TorrentFreak
Well, its no surprise for me. Even after crippling the PC versions by removing consoles and with no dedicated servers, everyone wanted a piece of this game. The single player experience alone was more than enough to buy this game. If it weren’t for the stupid move made by Infinity ward to strip down it’s PC version, for sure this game would have sold more and landed a perfect score in game reviews.
Lately, A lot of friends and people ask me what is my job since I’m just here sitting my ass all day long staring at my PC. Even my neighbors are quite curious what the hell I’m doing inside my home, heck I even heard rumors from “istambays” or slackers (just follow this link here from annpeace.wordpress.com for a wonderful explanation of the word istambay) that I was a Hacker. LOL If you’re also wondering what my work is, I’m a full time Work at Home guy for more than 2 years now. You can find more info about what I do here or visit my online portfolio.
There are tons of Work at home jobs / Home based work in the internet and there are a lot of Pinoy Home based workers just like me today and we are still growing. Jobs available ranges from Graphic Designing, Web Design and Development, Data Entry work like encoding, Call Center jobs, Programming, Virtual Assistant (Personal Assistant over the web) and a lot more. Some offer full time jobs while some offer Freelance work or Per Project basis. Since most home based workers are from third world countries, people from the US, UK, and some other First World Countries opt to find people like Filipinos and Indians since pay is lower than workers in their country.
After reading this, you might be wondering now where can you find Home based work? Actually, it’s quite simple, there are tons of Online Jobs sites out there that you can register an account so you can find jobs in their directory. The hard part is landing an actual job, since tons of people are actually applying online you will get many competitors there especially if you’re only doing Data Entry related work. I know a lot of people who asked me for help to get themselves started in Work at home jobs but haven’t landed a single job, the best that they can do was to land a interview. There are tons of reason why newbies in Home based work are having trouble landing a job, but one main reason is their profile. Just like Facebook, you want to make the best impression to your potential employer but apparently, people neglect this part and just create some simple profiles in Online Job sites. You can view this video from Odesk so you can have more idea how Work at Home jobs work:
Ready to look for a job? Here are some of the most widely known sites to start with:
Odesk.com – One of the best websites you can start with, I am a member here (You can view my profile here) for more than 6 months now and I can say this is one of the best, if not the best Online Jobs site out there today. Some of the reasons I love Odesk so much is because it offers both Fixed priced jobs or Hourly paying jobs aside from having many Pinoy members. Pinoy’s has good reputation in Odesk, so if you’re just starting things off I highly recommend this site.
Elance.com – Another great Online job site, it has a great reputation especially for Coders and programmers who are looking for Project based jobs.
Freelancer.com - Formerly GetAFreelancer.com, another reputable Online Job site with tons of jobs to offer.
There is a thread in Odesk for Pinoys here, you might want to check it out first and read some success stories or ask for any assistance. A lot of Pinoys will gladly help you in that thread including me. You can also leave a comment here or contact me through my email: kwekmiester@gmail.com for more questions and I will gladly reply.
The last time I seen someone literally camped outside of a store just to get what he wants is during the release of Sony’s PS3. This year, PCHUB, a local retailer of computer parts located at Gilmore Ave, Quezon City held their Year-End sale of computer parts ranging from Video cards, Motherboards, Power Supplies to speakers etc. all for a very cheap price. The initial price list that I saw included great deals like a HD 4870, HD 2900XT’s, a couple of 880o GT’s, several 1950XT and 1950 Pro’s. These where the most sought out items aside from P45 and 780G mobo’s from ECS and MSI. I personally wanted a 1950XT as a gift for my cousin since it was very cheap considering its power even though it’s a fairly old model from ATI. It was priced around 1500-2000 Php (30-40 USD) and A LOT of people really wanted it.
According to reports in this thread from tipidpc.com (you can follow the thread here), people where actually starting to line up the night before the sale just to get a crack at some very nice deals starting with the HD 4870. The sale was held in the 3rd floor of a building but lines where piling up way before the opening of the store at 10:00 AM. Around 8:00 AM the lines was almost at the road next to the building, just see the pics below to get an idea how long the line where.
All the parts that are sold can be replaced within 3 days if they defective, but all the items being sold don’t have any warranty at all, so if ever they get burnt or trashed out after just a few weeks or months of use, too bad you wont get any replacement/warranty for it. I even read in the thread that some dude bought 3 items from this event and all were defective, while some lucky dudes like me who went to the sale last year has their items still working for them up until now. So basically, luck is all you need here, from the items available to how long it will last with you.
Congrats to those lucky guys whoever you are who got the 4870′s, those 8800GT’s and 1950XT’s. As for the people who didn’t get the stuff they want, better luck next year, or better, just buy a new one since you’re already there at Gilmore. At least you have a warranty if ever your item/s gets problem.
