oDesk Team 3 is out

January 28th, 2010

Odesk providers especially hourly paid ones must have noticed that your Odesk Team has been updated to a newer version. The new Odesk Team version a.k.a. Odesk Team 3 is actually out now and if you have Odesk Team installed on your PC, it will automatically update the next time you login to your assignment.

After using it earlier, the biggest improvement with it is it’s new interface. This new interface really reminds me of Skype version 3 a lot and its a good thing since I really love that version of Skype. Aside from the new interface, you can also now view your Team Room in Odesk team not just on your logged assignment but to all your current hourly assignment. You can view if your team mates are online and view different kinds of information like the last time they logged in and total hours logged. Watch and see Odesk Team 3 in work:

Basically its the same Odesk Team we used to love (or hate) with an improved interface. If you find the new version not to your liking, don’t worry since there is an option to switch back to the old version.

British Girl Marries her Laptop?

January 25th, 2010

First, there was the same sex marriage. Second, the man who marries his video game. Now, a girl marries her laptop? Yup! you read it right. Meet Hermione, a 24 years old British girl who is unofficially engaged to her laptop for 11 months. Weird, isn’t it? I understand that technology revolves around us and “love conquers all”, but who would marry a laptop or a video game?

Marriage is sacred between two human beings not on Hermione’s side, love is every “Thing”. Well, love is blind, or so some say.  According to her, she spent every minute of her life with her laptop for the past 2 years. Dedicated to her so-called “LOVE”, she eventually treat her laptop as her one and only. Being in this kind of relation, you wouldn’t understand how she shares her life with it.  With the recent trend of people literally falling in love with with laptops like this girls and the Japanese dude who married a video game character, I won’t be surprised if in the near future people would marry robots. Watch this video and judge her for yourself.

Hermione and her laptop will be exchanging vows on January 31, 2010.

Well, Let’s hope Bill Gates doesn’t marry his Windows software…

Aliens vs. Predator Heritage Trailer

January 25th, 2010

Another highly anticipated game of 2010, a remake of the original 1999 hit Alien vs Predator. Slated for a February 16, 2010 for North America and 3 days later for the European version, it is the same team who made the original game – Rebellion Developments. I for one was a big fan of the orig AvP game, played it even when I was getting motion sickness since I just started playing computer games back at that time. For sure, fans will be pleased  since the original elements of the game is preserved  while getting a complete graphical overhaul that Rebellion Developments only dreamed off way back when they develop and made the original. With the level of hardware available today, this game will be much more scarier than the original. Watch this amazing trailer of Alien vs. Predator heritage so you can see a glimpse of what’s in store for this game.

Best Free Antivirus

January 24th, 2010

Lately, a lot of friends and “friend of friends” are  asking me what are the best Antivirus today, after giving them a recommendation they quickly get back at me saying it’s not free or way too expensive. Trust me, nothing beats a paid Antivirus software especially with it’s bloat-loads of packed security software. If you aren’t prepared to shed some cash for some kickass Antivirus, don’t worry coz there are some free but good Antivirus software for personal use right now. Here are some of Sporty Techie’s top recommendations:

Avast Antivirus logoAvast Antivirus (Home Edition)

One of the best free stuff you can ever download, It has high reviews across the net, sometimes second to Avira, if not topping the charts. IMHO, it’s fast and detects a fairly decent percentage of viruses and malwares. The only thing that I really hate about Avast is it’s interface, yes I hate it… A LOT! Aside from that, Avast doesn’t eat much of your CPU power and memory.

You can download the free version of Avast Antivirus here.

Avira Antivirus personalAvira Antivirus Personal Edition

Another highly recommended Free Antivirus software, Avira also has high reviews across the net occasionally beating Avast and other free Antivirus programs out there. It’s fast, eats up minimal resources and has a very sleek and simple interface that make it easy for non-geeks to understand how to use it. Why I put in second place below Avast? Well, one reason is bec. sometimes its updater can become a pain in the ass. Around 3 times I installed this for someone, it won’t update at all. Aside from that it often bugs you with pop-ups that can be really really annoying especially if your playing a  game or watching a movie.

You can download the free for personal use Avira Antivirus here.

Microsoft Security Essentials logo logoMicrosoft Security Essentials

Formerly known as One Livecare, this free Antivirus from Microsoft itself is fairly good, always in the top 5 of free Antivirus reviews. It’s basic, simple, and its made that way by Microsoft as it isn’t made to compete with other full featured Antivirus products like Symantec or Kaspersky. I really liked it sleek design aside from being moderately fast in scanning. It doesn’t hog much of your resources and it doesn’t slow down your boot time at all. In fact it speeds up your boot time for about a second according to some benchmarks. Basically, just install it and forget it, you don’t even need to tweak it’s settings and it will quietly download updates for you.

You can download Microsoft Security Essentials here.

Wait, no AVG? Honestly, this is the worst Antivirus software in my own opinion. In all the computers that I saw AVG installed, there’s always bound to be viruses. I even saw it scan flash drives and detect viruses, and that’s it. It cant delete or quarantine the detected threats. I know AVG is free but at least offer some aggressive protection. Even its paid version is bad, I highly recommend that you STAY AWAY from this one (Sorry AVG lovers).

Still, even all these free Antivirus products can’t protect you with the most vicious viruses. Avira let me down almost 25% of the time, failing to protect the computers that I installed this into. By far the most effective Antivirus software I can recommend is Kaspersky, but comes with a hefty price. You can still try it for 30 days and see for yourself. Remember, your PC’s protection is still in your hands.
