Missing out all the rain (and pain) in CamSur

August 21st, 2011 by Sporty Techie No comments »

What every Pinoy triathlete who trained hard for months finally ended last August 14 and it was a first of sorts. The 3rd edition of the Cobra Ironman 70.3 will surely be remembered bec. of the rainy weather that helped keep participants their cool over the course of the race that day. It was also the first time that rules were strictly implemented including the non-drafting rule and the swim cut-off time, and Kona slots were up for grab. This year’s Half-Ironman event was definitely bigger and better than the previous two, more than 850 participants joining the biggest triathlon event in the country. I gave my SportyTechie two thumbs up for the race organizers for giving us local triathletes a world class triathlon event!

Since February of this year, I started training for this event just to miss the race itself due to illness. I got Dengue fever, a disease caused by mosquitoes especially during the rainy season were cases are common and even outbreaks declared in some provinces. With extremely bad luck, I got the disease almost one week to go before the race day. Initially, I thought it was a flu but when I got the rashes (a common symptom of Dengue fever) it was surely a miss for me for CamSur. My fate was sealed as blood test confirmed it, and even though the symptoms disappeared in about a week there is no way I’m able to participate for this year’s Cobra Ironman 70.3. Dengue takes about 2-4 weeks full recovery and in my case, I was still in recovery mode (Strength and Endurance not back yet) on the race day itself (August 14).

My morale was in its all time low, months of training for nothing and financially speaking lots of my hard earned money wasted (Joining an Ironman event isn’t cheap). I even considered to participate on the race but my better judgement and advice from a fellow teammate which is a doctor made me accept that this year isn’t the year for me to fulfill my lifelong dream of finishing the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines. Still, I wouldn’t let this event pass w/o me seeing my Greenhills Tri-Team mates off so at the last minute, I decided to drive all the way to CamSur with my GF to watch the event. It was all worth it except for the 9 hr long drive to Camsur!

Ohh well, there’s always next year and a chance to redeem myself at Whiterock Triathlon on October 1! To all finishers of this year’s Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines, Congratulations and see you next year!

IRONMAN – One of the toughest sport consisting of three parts: 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon (26.2 miles  42.195 km) run.

This is one of the most inspirational stories not just in Ironman history but in the Sporting world. Jon “Blazeman” Blais

Blais completed the 2005 Ford Ironman World Championship despite being diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This year, Blais returned to Kona to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of new supporters of “The War on ALS.”

Chinese couple sells three of their kids to fund online gaming habit

August 8th, 2011 by Sporty Techie No comments »

Interesting article from ph.news.yahoo.com about a Chinese couple selling their children for money to satisfy their gaming addiction. Kids and adult gamers, don’t take gaming too seriously!

Make love not Warcraft

Gaming can get quite time and resource consuming, but two gamers have reached a new low in pursuit of virtual gratification. A southern Chinese newspaper is reporting that a young Chinese couple has been found guilty of selling their three children off to support a gaming habit.

It sounds like a ludicrous scenario but according to Sanxiang City News, the couple from Dongguan, China first met in 2007 in Internet cafe; both were under 21 years old. Bonding over a mutual online gaming obsession, the two eventually had their first child a year later. However, the couple couldn’t be weaned from online gaming and within a few days of their son’s birth they left him home alone so they could trek to an Internet cafe 18 miles away.

Li Lin and Li Juan didn’t begin selling children until 2009 with the birth of their second child, a baby girl. Graduating from simple neglect, the young couple sold the baby girl to fund their obsession and received a short-lived sum equivalent to $500. With the success of the baby girl they then proceeded to sell their firstborn son and received close to $4600 for him; almost ten times the amount as the girl.

Marathon Queen Banayag rules Metro Manila MILO Marathon elims

August 3rd, 2011 by Sporty Techie No comments »

Congrats to our very own MILO  Marathon Queen Jho-Ann Banayag for bagging the top spot at the 35th National Milo Marathon Manila Eliminations. Too bad our own Eric Panique didn’t got the top spot for the male divisions as he falls behind Tallam of Kenya.

MILO® Marathon QueensMANILA, July 31, 2011— Two-time MILO® Marathon Queen Jho-Ann Banayag led a 1-2-3 finish by the Filiipina bets in the Metro Manila elimination of the 35th National MILO® Marathon, which started and ended at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City.

The 29-year-old Banayag of Compostela Valley left behind RP training pool teammate Mary Grace de los Santos in the first 18 kilometers along Gil Puyat Ave. going to the Fort to finish the full 42.195-km race in 2:53:37. “I could not improve my best time because of the rain–the course was slippery at times and my damp shoes made my feet heavier,” said the Philippine Army private first class Banayag.

Organizers have put a Php 20,000 bonus prize to the first female runner who breaks Jhoan Banayag’s MILO® Marathon women’s course record of 2:48:16. With this, Banayag looks to better her performance in the finals and break her own record.

She added that the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) is considering the MILO® Marathon as a qualifier for inclusion to the RP national team. “I really hope to make it to the RP team and do a repeat of my 2009 Laos Sea Games marathon victory,” added Banayag, the Milo National Finals champion in 2005 and 2006.”

De los Santos of Cebu settled for second with a time of 2:55:10 while Ailene Tolentino was a far third with a clocking of 3:11:32, denying Kenyan runners, Susan Jemutai and Peris Poywo of a chance to grab the limelight. Jemutai managed a 3:11:43 finish for fourth and Poywo finished seventh in 3:48:29.

It’s a different story on the men’s side, as 24-year-old Tallam of Item, Kenya made his presence felt when he crossed the finish line all alone in 2:28:42 besting Eric Panique for the crown in the elite men’s category. Panique timed 2:31:16 for second followed by Ireneo Raquim for third with a clocking of 2:32:26 and Elmer Sabal at fourth in 2:33:15. Benjamin Kipzaki also of Kenya finished fifth with a time of 2:48:14. “My strategy was to maintain my pace on the first half of the race, then I sped up to gain my lead from there. I think my training joining different marathons across Southeast Asia helped boost my performance in the race,” said 24 year old Tallam.
