Marathon Queen Banayag rules Metro Manila MILO Marathon elims

Congrats to our very own MILO  Marathon Queen Jho-Ann Banayag for bagging the top spot at the 35th National Milo Marathon Manila Eliminations. Too bad our own Eric Panique didn’t got the top spot for the male divisions as he falls behind Tallam of Kenya.

MILO® Marathon QueensMANILA, July 31, 2011— Two-time MILO® Marathon Queen Jho-Ann Banayag led a 1-2-3 finish by the Filiipina bets in the Metro Manila elimination of the 35th National MILO® Marathon, which started and ended at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City.

The 29-year-old Banayag of Compostela Valley left behind RP training pool teammate Mary Grace de los Santos in the first 18 kilometers along Gil Puyat Ave. going to the Fort to finish the full 42.195-km race in 2:53:37. “I could not improve my best time because of the rain–the course was slippery at times and my damp shoes made my feet heavier,” said the Philippine Army private first class Banayag.

Organizers have put a Php 20,000 bonus prize to the first female runner who breaks Jhoan Banayag’s MILO® Marathon women’s course record of 2:48:16. With this, Banayag looks to better her performance in the finals and break her own record.

She added that the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) is considering the MILO® Marathon as a qualifier for inclusion to the RP national team. “I really hope to make it to the RP team and do a repeat of my 2009 Laos Sea Games marathon victory,” added Banayag, the Milo National Finals champion in 2005 and 2006.”

De los Santos of Cebu settled for second with a time of 2:55:10 while Ailene Tolentino was a far third with a clocking of 3:11:32, denying Kenyan runners, Susan Jemutai and Peris Poywo of a chance to grab the limelight. Jemutai managed a 3:11:43 finish for fourth and Poywo finished seventh in 3:48:29.

It’s a different story on the men’s side, as 24-year-old Tallam of Item, Kenya made his presence felt when he crossed the finish line all alone in 2:28:42 besting Eric Panique for the crown in the elite men’s category. Panique timed 2:31:16 for second followed by Ireneo Raquim for third with a clocking of 2:32:26 and Elmer Sabal at fourth in 2:33:15. Benjamin Kipzaki also of Kenya finished fifth with a time of 2:48:14. “My strategy was to maintain my pace on the first half of the race, then I sped up to gain my lead from there. I think my training joining different marathons across Southeast Asia helped boost my performance in the race,” said 24 year old Tallam.

35th National Milo Marathon Manila Eliminations – Running in the rain

August 1st, 2011 by Sporty Techie 2 comments »

35th National Milo Marathon
Congratulations to all finishers especially the Full Marathon warriors who conquered the rain at the 35th edition of the National Milo Marathon. It was the complete opposite from last year’s hot sunny temperature compared to this year’s cold and wet climate, not to mention the new venue at SM MOA, RunRio in charge of organizing the Manila Eliminations and its new IAAF & AIMS certification for the race route meaning the 35th National Milo Marathon is now an official qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Running under the rain isn’t new to me, but running in the rain during a running event is definitely new. Many were expecting the rain, but few were prepared for the strong deluge right before the gun start of the 42km (4 AM) Full Marathon category. The rain continued to pour hard with cold headwinds when the 21k started to run around 5 AM. My final long run before the upcoming Cobra Ironman 70.3, I ran the 21k category again just like last year which was actually my first half marathon, together with Rafael (my cousin) and my Bro Andy with first-time 21k runner Carlo. Tagging along is Vince, who ran 10k this time unlike last year’s 5k. We all had a bad start, as we came in late about 12 mins because of traffic build up along EDSA. The gameplan right from the start is me and Rafael go for a sub-2 hour finish while Carlo and my Bro finish within the cut-off time (2hr 30mins) since RunRio implied that they will be strict on implementing the rules.

RunRio still continued their streak on giving the local running community a world class event. Even though it was raining hard, the 35th National Milo Marathon Manila Eliminations was a huge success. RunRio really shined when then implemented a different route for the 3k and 5k runners and 10k, 21k and 42km runners. Last year was chaos since the route towards the finish line was the same for all categories. Many 3k and 5k runners loitering the route and taking pictures, blocking the 10k, 21k and 42k runners. Adding insult to injury, they hogged all the water at the last few water stations of the race leaving the long distance 21k and 42k runners nothing for hydration. This year, hydration stations were better with longer tables each serving with water and Powerade, and bananas given at certain distances.

My Complain – Rules not implemented. Screw the rules, just like last year the rules weren’t implemented and the cut-off time was good for nothing, at least for the 21k. According to the official results, about 30% of the 21k finishers didn’t make it to the 2:30 cut-off but still given the chance to finish and get awarded by medals. I think the main reason why RunRio gave leverage regarding the cut-off time was because of the bad weather but still, RunRio shouldn’t had implied that they will be implementing the rules if they weren’t going to implement it. It was a different scenario for the 42k runners, from what I heard RunRio were strict with the cut-off times at certain distances.

Congratulations to Nestle on their 100th year Anniversary and RunRio for the great job organizing the 35th National Milo Marathon – Manila Eliminations. I gave you my SportyTechie two thumbs up! Up Next – Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines!

RunRio lived up to everyone’s expectation! Probably one of the fastest running event that published results online, the official time and PR time were readily available for viewing a few hours after the event. Congratulations to Eric Panique for winning the Male 42km category with an official time of 02:31:14 and to Jho-an Banayag for the Female 42km category with an official time of 02:53:35.

RunRio’s streak in giving the local running community world-class events continues with the 4th Runrio Series Manila, Rexona Run 2011. Certainly a huge success and a better one than last year, Rexona Run 2011 gem shines on its post event activities. Free Rock Climbing, Rappelling and Zip-line anyone? If you’re running the upcoming 35th Milo Marathon, the Rexona Run 2011 is a good way to scout the course.

Me and my bro had a good run, me finishing with a official time of 1:52 and completing my post Tri-United training workout with a good 21k in this event. As usual RunRio style, water stations were plentiful, Race Marshalls and medics along the route and a awesome post event activity area means a SportyTechie two thumbs up!
