University of Florida Adds Starcraft Studies

Starcraft is being used to teach resource management skills in a new course offering at the University of Florida – but it’s only open to students in the honors college, and students have to have some familiarity with the game.

Nate Poling, a Ph.D candidate at UF, came up with the idea and sold his department on it, so IDS 2935 “21st Century Skills in Starcraft,” will be offered as an online-only class this coming semester.

Starcraft as a college subject isn’t new; California-Berkeley offered a course on competitive Starcraft through its renowned Haas School of Business. At Florida, it sounds like Poling’s lesson plan will also align Starcraft to business management.

Those who run businesses, factories and hospitals must manage according to their knowledge of their personnel’s strengths, weaknesses and different abilities, sort of the same calculus involved in StarCraft.

“A student who gets a normal education, gets an MBA, and is in the business world, he could realize that something he learned in his StarCraft course helps him think outside of the box,” Poling told MIT’s Technology Review. “You synthesize this with an MBA program and voila – you have an innovative business practice.”

He’s careful to stress this is a supplemental course, not a replacement for traditional teaching methods. Poling anticipates it’ll be a popular offering, but the StarCraft skillz and honors-only requisites should keep him from getting swamped by students wanting to play games for a grade.

There is no final examination, but the course does count toward undergrads’ GPA.

Only a few people getting their SC2 copies @ Datablitz Festival Mall around 10am

With pure excitement, I was with the first batch of eagerly gamers who swarmed Datablitz Festival Mall, where I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition of the game. I was surprised to see only a few folks lining up to get their copies as early as the Mall opens. Here I met fellow TPC’ers eternal_14 who also got the Collectors Edition of the game and was the lucky first in line of the batch. There were about 5 people at around 10 am and a few moments later, I met theDud3 who was late for about 10 mins.

Will follow up with pics and video of me unboxing the Collectors Edition of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty.

Starcraft II Beta Invite a Friend

March 21st, 2010

As if Beta testers weren’t lucky enough to get invited for an Multiplayer Beta account for Starcraft II, Blizzard is letting them invite their “Friends” for another Beta account via their Invite a Friend program. According to Kotaku, Blizzard is sending out e-mails with extra StarCraft II beta keys to share with a friend. The one-time use invite may be part of Blizzard’s efforts to further test the new Battle.net “Real ID” feature, as the invites encourage beta testers and friends of beta testers to buddy up.

If you are one of the lucky guys who have a Beta Account and you told you’re gamer friends that you got one, they will be begging you for that invite after they knew about this. Some Beta account holders will surely take advantage of this and probably sell one of their keys online via Ebay for some cash. BTW, Lucky Beta account gamers, I can be your friend :D
