White Rock Triathlon 2011

October 18th, 2011

One of the toughest Triathlon events in the country, the eight edition of the Annual Whiterock Triathlon with its Half-Ironman distance (2km Swim – 90km Bike – 20km Run) was even more challenging than its previous races as this year is HARDCORE as participants must race under Signal no.2 waves, winds and rain brought by Typhoon Quiel. Finally finished my first Half-Iron distance triathlon and “redeemed myself” after missing out CamSur last August due to Dengue.

Four of us Greenhills Tri Team members are present  and braved the Typhoon lashed course of Zambales. Leading the way is my teammate Kevin with a time of 6 hours and 4 minutes followed by me with a time of 6 hours and 52 mins. Our veteran Uncle Willy came in third with a time of 6 hours 40 mins and Alfredo Santos although getting declassified still finished the tough course with 7 hours and 5 mins.

Me and Kevs were quite surprised at first that the waves isn’t that strong considering the whole province is under Signal no.2, but as soon as the swim progressed the waves started to swell even dragging the marker buoys a few hundred meters from its original position. Got out of the water in about 1hr and 15 mins and there are still quite a lot of participants finishing their swim. The Bike leg wasn’t that bad, with a strong but manageable headwind during the first 45km of the course, though it helped us participants during the ride back to Whiterock. The run leg was a different thing, rains where gradually pouring in and getting worse as the race nears it final 2 hours before cut-off time. The minute I crossed the finish line, the finish line was almost thrown away by lashing winds.

All in all the race is a experience worth remembering for all the Whiterock participants, now we all know what HARDCORE really means!

Whiterock Triathlon 2011

One of the longest running triathlon event in the country, the Whiterock Triathlon (formerly Tri United at Whiterock) is back on its eight year. With a 2km Open Water swim, 90km bike ride and 20km run, its equivalent to an Ironman 70.3 distance that is held yearly at Subic. Will definitely join this event since I missed out the Cobra Ironman 70.3 due to illness.

Here are the details for the 2011 Whiterock Triathlon:

Event Name: Whiterock Triathlon 2011

91km road bike
20km run

RACE COURSE

Swim Course
The swim leg is a 2 km course at the beachfront of the White Rock Beach Resort into Subic Bay. The Greater Subic Tourism Bureau, together with the White Rock Resort and the local communities, assures eXtribe that efforts are going to be made to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the swim course.

Features: anchored swim buoy lines, multi-loop course, jet-ski patrols, kayak guides.

Bike Course
The 91-kilometer bike course will pass through several towns of Zambales, each with aid stations to provide water and/or medical aid, thanks to the support of the local government and the Zambales Department of Tourism Office. Traffic marshals will be deployed along the major intersections and critical areas. The road is flat and in excellent condition. Efforts will be made to free the highway of traffic and hazards.

Features: flat and smooth road, police motorcycle escort, aid stations at strategic locations, medical support and ambulance, and a 45-km turn-around station (supplied with isotonic drinks, bananas, ice and water, equipped with toilet facilities, medical aid and special needs bags).

Run Course
The run course is 20 kilometers long and will enter the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, allowing for much improvement of the racecourse, in terms of traffic flow, pollution control and logistical support. The “notoriously” difficult portions of the run course – what has come to be called the “Heartbreak Hills” and the “Microwave” from the previous editions but were not around in last year’s WRT are now back.

Features: Rolling course, water stations every 2.5 km (supplied with isotonic drinks, ice and water), sponging stations in between water stations, and a run turn-around station (supplied with isotonic drinks, bananas, ice and water, equipped with toilet facilities, medical aid and special needs bags).
